Renewable Diesel Roundtable to Address Processing, Materials, and Corrosion Challenges

St. Louis, MO  --- The Materials Technology Institute (MTI) is holding a Renewable Diesel Roundtable June 21 in Kansas City, MO, in conjunction with MTI’s North American Technical Advisory Council (AmeriTAC) meeting. This special event, open to producers of bio diesel and renewables, will focus on processing, materials and corrosion challenges for unfamiliar feedstocks.

As a “drop-in” biofuel, renewable diesel is currently the fastest-growing “new” addition to the suite of energy sources. Suppliers, fabricators, and engineers will be tasked to select materials, predict damage mechanisms, and establish mechanical integrity programs for renewables units as companies build equipment and start processing renewable feeds.

“The Roundtable aims to educate and bring a clear understanding of the ‘what’ and the ‘why now?’ of renewable diesel and its distinction from biodiesel, as well as provide knowledge of the major damage mechanisms of concern, candidate materials and pitfalls when processing renewable feeds,” according to Nate Sutton, Roundtable Co-Chair. In addition, presentations and discussions will give attendees an understanding of the role of corrosion control documents and integrity operating windows for renewables units. Finally, this one-time event will share information about challenges in renewables units and will identify areas for MTI projects to help fill the knowledge gaps.

The current Roundtable agenda includes presentations covering:

  • Renewable Hydrocarbon Biofuels Overview – Laws/Regulations, and U.S. Government Perspective
  • Policy and Regulatory Considerations for Renewable Hydrocarbon Biofuels – U.S. and Europe
  • Pretreatment of Renewable Feedstock – Objectives, Types of Pretreatment Units and Downstream Implications
  • Hydrotreating Bio-Oils – Renewable Diesel Unit Process, Catalyst, and Layout Considerations
  • Damage Mechanisms in Pretreatment Biofuels Processing Units
  • Leveraging Integrity Operating Windows (IOWs) to Enhance Renewable Diesel Unit Reliability and Profitability
  • Use of Polymeric Coatings in Storage, Handling and Pretreatment
