Provide the industry with a comprehensive, introductory and overview book on ceramics and refractories for the Chemical Process Industry (CPI). A book will be written on new design and construction, repairs and inspections for all types of ceramic materials including acid brick, carbon brick, castables, ceramic fiber, graphite, high temp refractory, rammed materials, anchor, linings and ferrule materials. Installation and Inspection will also be covered. Each topic will be given approximately 10 pages. Additional topics that may be covered include mortar joint sizing, installation and repair, inspection and monitoring (Thermography, UT, Visual).

Develop standard, critical and operational IOW templates/guidance for the most common chemical plants. The common chemical process IOW templates will be a MTI stand-alone product and/or serve as an addendum to API 584.
The objective of this project is to identify corrosion data for aqueous lithium halide systems useful for CPI processes that is not available in the literature. Laboratory corrosion tests will be funded to create the needed data for use by MTI members.
Additive Manufacturing (AM) provides designers the ability to build parts directly from computer-aided design (CAD) files. Metal AM technology is rapidly maturing and offers a range of benefits to reduce cost, schedule and increase performance of Boiler and Pressure Vessel (BPV) systems. The impact to the BPV industry has been limited by the availability of standards. Several American standard bodies are developing consensus-based standards. MTI has been invited to join a project developed by ASME and EWI which leverages prior initiatives in which EWI developed arc DED metal AM qualification schemes. The project objective is to use this effort to validate the qualification schemes for materials used in fabrication of BVP equipment.

ASSET (Alloy Selection System for Elevated Temperature) is a powerful high temperature corrosion prediction program that was developed in a JIP with MTI, Shell and others with DOE funding in 2000-2005. Action is required to update the software and improve its functionalities so that it can continue to be of value to MTI members.
The measurement of the mechanical properties of in-service metallic materials are important to obtain to determine the condition, to calculate remaining life and conduct fitness for service studies. Most methods for determining toughness and creep resistance are destructive and based on Charpy Impact Tests, fracture mechanics based CTOD (crack tip opening displacement) tests, and creep tests performed on standardized test pieces. The test pieces used for these types of tests must meet precise dimensional criteria and require material samples of substantial thicknesses due to their geometry. Therefore, sampling operations require shutting down equipment and cutting a material sample if it is possible to repair after sample removal or removing equipment from service. This is not always possible, particularly if a repair would require heat treatment after welding, so rather conservative estimates are often. Small Sample Testing Techniques (SSTT) allow for actual mechanical properties to be measured from field equipment without requiring repairs or damaging the equipment. - This project intends to Assemble a list of companies, academic institutions and other institutions doing the small sampling and testing applicable to the CPI. - Evaluate the properties needed for fitness for service (FFS) evaluations and determine which of those properties can be measured using “small sample testing techniques” (SSTT). - Conduct a literature review for SSTT capabilities of each of ...
