In Memory of Galen Hodge, MTI Fellow

ST. LOUIS, MO. – It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Galen Hodge, longtime member and MTI Fellow. Hodge had over 23 years of dedicated service to MTI as the Designated Representative for Haynes International. In 1980, he joined the Board of Directors and served diligently on the Finance, Audit and Membership Committees before moving into a leadership role as the Vice-Chairman and Board Chairman from 1993 to 1996. He left the board in 1999 and retired as the Designated Representative of Haynes in 2001 but continued to serve MTI as an Associate Director. We greatly appreciate all the work Galen put in as the head of the organization and behind the scenes to tackle issues such as the dues structure head on and promote and develop MTI membership. 

Galen was a leader and mentor whose love for the organization helped to mold the foundation for which the pillars of MTI stand on today. In 2001 he was honored along with the other founders of MTI with the very first Fellow Award, the highest honor within the organization.

Beyond his work at MTI, Hodge was a gracious and kind man. He set the tone at MTI of camaraderie and friendship, always supporting and encouraging his colleagues. Anyone that was honored to have known him and called him their friend is better off for it. I am so sad to learn that Galen passed away

Galen was very important in my life 
When I was working for Haynes, He was the one who asked me if I was interested to join the technology departement in Kokomo and he became my boss during one year in technology. After that time he became Marketing Vice president , I was also part of his team.
When we made some join visits for Haynes to European companies , he was alwaus taking some time to introduce the MTI organisation.
It is really at that time that I discovered the MTI
And when I retired from Haynes , he called me and Asked if I would be interested to join the MTI…
He was my mentor and he was my friend
He was always ready to listen you , showing interest for your ideas ready to provide good advices and help.

I had the pleasure of interacting with Galen while he was a representative of Haynes in the ‘90s as well as an MTI Associate Director until he retired in 2010. From my early years of participation at MTI meetings, I recall Galen not only as a recognized SME in practical applications of Nickel-based alloys but also as a professional who always demonstrated MTI culture of respect, and as a strong champion of MTI membership interests. Galen was also instrumental in expanding the reach and impact of MTI beyond North America to Europe and Asia.

Rest in Peace Galen! My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

There are certain friends whose loss makes you just stop what you are doing and instead think about all the good times, and enjoy the confirmation of your faith that we might really meet again.

Galen and I arrived at MTI at about the same time, and an instant friendship was formed which grew steadily in all the decades that followed. We seriously enjoyed just being together, which is so true as you know of several others in this special collection of ours.

Next to Hazel, Galen’s most compulsive dedication was an enduring obsession with the MTI Dues structure. Eisenhower invaded Europe with less planning than Galen Hodge devoted to MTI Dues, and he shared his latest thoughts, frequently and at seemingly endless length, at every single meeting without fail. At one meeting in Houston, our Chairman Bill Ashbaugh suggested that it was time to adjourn to the bar, and I suggested instead that we ask Galen for his current recommendations on MTI Dues. That was met with a series of epithets that made me think that the Fleet was suddenly in. On the way downstairs, Galen asked “So you think I maybe overdo it a bit?” And I shrugged and replied, “Maybe a tad.”

Goodbye, my friend. You paid your dues.

Galen's history with MTI goes back to the beginning of the organization, and his efforts and contributions are still seen throughout our DNA.  He was an Associate Director when I hired in, he was a huge part of mentoring and supporting me as I learned the ropes of MTI  He will be missed, but I am grateful for all he did in shaping MTI and contributing to the level of excellence that we have as our foundation.
