  • 1.  Bismuth In Stainless Steel Welding Consumables

    Greetings!

    i would like to know if Bismuth is required to be reported in the material testing certificate as per ASME II-C SFA 5.4 Table 1.

    Bismuth was mentioned in the notes of the table1 ( note e). so is it an essential element to be reported since we know the effect of Bi in the weld metal? and if Bi content is way above the limit (20PPM), do we reject the use of this welding consumable which will be used in high temperature application?

    Bismuth is mentioned in SFA-5.22, A8.1.4 "Bismuth (Bi) in Flux Cored Stainless Steel Electrodes."  I don't see it mentioned in SFA-5.4

    It is mentioned in Table 1 in SFA 5.4 ( page 105) in note e.

    Table footnotes are mandatory. The manufacturer should have reported it if it was intentionally added or there was reason to suspect that it was present. As a user (I presume that is your status), you would have no way of knowing what the manufacturer intended. In my experience with wrought stainless steels, the base metal Bi content typically is less than 10 parts per million (0.00001 %).

    Yes you are correct, you should require Bi be reported in the material test certificate. I would reject the use of the rod if Bi is above 20ppm for use in high temperature application, 900F-1000F per ASME II-C A8.1.4/API 582 6.4.2.4. I have seen a high temperature stainless weld on an FCC expander fail ~75% of the circumference and it was found to have high Bi in the weld metal.
