Supplemental notes from Feb 18th, 2022 meeting by Jeremy Nelson (A Rentsch posting on behalf of Jeremy)
2/18/22 meeting attendees
Heather Allain, MTI
Dale Heffner, Electro Chemical
Dale Keeler, MTI
Byron Keelin, MTI
Jeremy Nelson, Koch
Karen Picker, Sandvik
Andrew Rentsch, Huntsman
Cathy Shargay, Fluor
Nate Sutton, Equity Engineering
Chris Wozniak, Marathon sitting in for Dana Williams
May 2022 API Biodiesel (to be renamed Biofuels) Roundtable - Ivan Morales (Exxon) chair
- Focused on failures, not materials selection
- UOP and Haldor Topsoe
- Not a lot of focus on pretreatment units.
Fluor's experience, licensor feels they have solved all the problems, but Fluor is not confident they have flexibility to handle changes in feedstock or severity.
Licensors include Desmet Ballestra Desmet Ballestra - Science Behind Technology, Alfa Laval
Marathon is doing corrosion testing on pretreatment, but test data has had interesting results. They would be interested in seeing others' results. Probably half and half of owner/users are involved in pretreatment.
Nate Sutton - pretreatment involves high temperature acidic water, like a desalter.
Renewable biofuel is a drop-in replacement (ie hydrotreated), the DOE defines biodiesel as a low temperature transesterified.
Chirag Joshi (UOP) will be involved at API, might be interested in MTI if Haldor Topsoe is presenting.
Dale Heffner - Most railcar and truck trailer coatings are thin film phenolics (Carboline and SW). Arkema and Chemours are talking about high temperature corrosion resistant coatings (Kynar, Teflon). Contact Surojit.B.Mukherjee@akzonobel.com for potential speaker on "storage and handling of renewable feeds".
Possible project to apply ASTM C868 to tallow environments for coatings in storage and transportation. Tallows start off noncorrosive but over time become corrosive due to water absorption. Treated (technical) vs untreated tallow.
Topic and Speaker list
DOE Outlook - Eileen Chant
European Laws/Regulations, quick overview of hydroprocessing biofuels, materials selection in biofuels hydroprocessing units - Karen will talk to Maria (Haldor Topsoe)
Damage Mechanisms in pretreatment Biofuels processing units - Chirag Joshi (UOP) or Jeremy Staats (Becht)
Using IOW's to maximize coprocessing / Leveraging IOWs to make new 'sustainable' process technologies profitable- Nate Sutton (Equity)
Pretreatment
Transportation, Storage and handling of renewable feeds - Dale Heffner will talk to Polymer suppliers
***Will not cover molecular recycling in this roundtable.

Becht can definitely help out with a panelist and overview presentation on damage mechanisms/materials issues in pretreatment biofuels. Just let us know so we can work to get a presentation together for this group to review.

Hi All,
The tentative agenda, as we discussed Friday, is below, along with names of folks who were going to follow up with potential speakers. When you reach out, I would emphasize that the topic/title below is tentative, and represents a general topic - if the speaker would rather tweak this and present something on the same general theme, but slightly different, we are certainly open to that.
- Renewable Hydrocarbon Biofuels – Overview, Laws/Regulations, and US Government Perspective
- Potential Speaker Eileen Chant or alternative US DOE Contact (Byron following up with Eileen)
- Renewable Diesel in Europe – Regulatory Considerations, Market Development and Outlook
- Potential Speaker Maria Jose or alternative Haldor Topsoe representative (Karen following up with Maria)
- Hydrotreating Bio-Oils: Renewable Diesel Unit Process, Catalyst, and Layout Considerations
- Potential Speaker Maria Jose or alternative Haldor Topsoe representative (Karen following up with Maria)
- Garry Jacobs/alternative Fluor contact (Cathy following up if Haldor is out)
- Pretreatment of Renewable Feedstock – Objectives, Types of Pretreatment units and downstream implications
- Potential Speaker Garry Jacobs or alternative from Fluor (Cathy following up)
- Damage Mechanisms in pretreatment Biofuels processing units
- Chirag Joshi, UOP (Chris will contact Chirag) or Jeremy Staats (Becht – I think Chris was also going to reach out to Jeremy if Chirag can't present)
- Leveraging IOWs to Enhance Renewable Diesel Unit Reliability and Profitability
- Nate Sutton – Equity Engineering
- Transportation, Storage and Handling of Renewable feeds
- Potential Speaker – Polymeric coating/lining supplier (Dale Heffner will talk to Polymer suppliers)
Thanks!
