MTI Knowledge Roundtable: Materials Selection and Materials Performance for Sustainable Industrial Applications (385)

All, here is my outline of a decent roundtable meeting agenda. Assuming we can find speakers for all the topics, I Think a program like this would be well received. comments welcome.

Monday – focus balanced between MTI members and visitor companies coming specifically for symposium

    • Overview of Biofuels – definitions, processes, outlook & interest (DOE /E. Chant contact?).
    • Biofuels – Laws, regulations, government-business perspective (Haldor Topsoe possibly?)
    • Bio-fuels – Damage mechanisms, materials selection and use for new and converted units (E2G could give if we don't find another)
    • Overview of Molecular recycling/plastics to fuels (MTI member already doing this?)
    • Bringing materials engineering to startups/new technologies – with a focus on molecular recycling.
    • Leveraging IOWs to make new 'sustainable' process technologies profitable
    • MTI's role in supporting sustainability in the process industries

Structured forums – focus geared towards established MTI members:

    • Materials engineering & fixed equipment reliability audits for facility acquisitions – a focus on the things to look for in newly-acquired (and potential) assets.
    • Scaling up new process technology – But did you think about damage mechanisms?
    • Sustainability in Fabrication - guidelines for material purchasing requirements (suggested by Mark vdBr)

Perhaps someone will be posting more detailed minutes... During our Jan 20, 2022 meeting we agreed to narrow the focus of the TAC 138 Monday roundtable to essentially the first three bullet points on Nate's list above. Father's day is on Sunday June 19th, so allowing for travel on the morning of Monday 6/20 means we have time for 1/2 day of content. Plus two structured forum presentations (1 on Tuesday, 1 on Wednesday) which can follow Monday's theme, or not.

Many of the other topics in Nate's list above were discussed - including molecular recycling to make new materials (not just energy). However not adding to a clear/cohesive theme, we agreed they were better for future topics or structured forum ideas.

Nate shared the following link in the meeting chat, wanted to post here as well.
    Renewable Diesel's Rising Tide | BiodieselMagazine.com

Here is list of all North American Refineries I am aware of through AFPM AFPM-Capacity-Report-2021.pdf

One goal is to engage regional (Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa) non-MTI member companies. We should keep this audience, and our existing/new MTI membership in mind as we develop the content.

Also, here is a link to request Nate's excellent webinar on Corrosion and Materials Considerations for Renewable Diesel and other Fuel-from-Biomass Units
Webinars - The Equity Engineering Group, Inc. (e2g.com)

Next meeting on February 19th, Jeremy to send invite.

I actually just stumbled across this community, but has MTI considered how we, as Materials Engineers, can positively influence Scope 3 emissions at a minimum with metals, their use, protective coatings, etc?  And how would this benefit an end user (our companies)?  Does everyone even understand what the Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions are and how our roles play a part?  Is this something we want to address during this?  Also, please let me know if this is not the intent of the roundtable.  But understanding how our roles bring sustainability value to our companies via MTI seems like a big opportunity.  We could even invite our company sustainability folks.

Nina, per our chat - this roundtable has pivoted to be focused on the BioOils corrosion issues. I believe the intent is to rename this community and the agenda for the June meeting to reflect that focus.

I will work with Andrew Rentsch regarding possible speakers on materials engineering and Scope 3 emissions. If we find someone we will try to get that as a structured forum speaker, ideally in the June meeting. If not, it might have to wait until October.
