Building off Nate's meeting notes from our previous discussion on Feb 18, 2022, shown below in black, updates were provided and are shown in red.
Topic and Speaker List
- Renewable Hydrocarbon Biofuels – Overview, Laws/Regulations, and US Government Perspective / DOE Outlook
-
- Byron contacted Eileen Chant (US DOE), she suggested Zia Haq (Senior Analyst with Bioenergy Technology Office, BETO)
- Zia Haq | Department of Energy
- Byron to inquire if Zia can also speak to European Regulatory Considerations topic (Haldor Topse has declined this topic)
- Renewable Diesel in Europe – Regulatory Considerations, Market Development and Outlook
-
- Karen contacted Maria and Anette at Haldor Topsoe, they cannot speak on this topic, but will provide speaker on materials selection (see below)
- Byron to inquire if Zia can also speak to European Regulatory Considerations topic (see topic 1 above)
- Hydrotreating Bio-Oils: Renewable Diesel Unit Process, Catalyst, and Layout Considerations
- Anette Hansson, Haldor Topsoe, can speak on materials selection in biofuels Hydroprocessing units
- need to confirm if Anette plans to be in-person or present over Zoom (Byron emailed Karen asking on 3/24)
-
- Garry Jacobs/alternative Fluor contact (Cathy following up if Haldor is out)
- Cathy mentioned Garry Jacobs, would be connecting virtually, if speaking, as Flour only sending 1 representative to meeting in-person.
- Pretreatment of Renewable Feedstock – Objectives, Types of Pretreatment units and downstream implications
- Potential Speaker Garry Jacobs or alternative from Fluor (Cathy following up)
- Team discussed combining this topic with the next on Damage Mechanisms
- Damage Mechanisms in pretreatment Biofuels processing units
- Chirag Joshi, UOP (Chris will contact Chirag) or Jeremy Staats (Becht – I think Chris was also going to reach out to Jeremy if Chirag can't present)
- Name correction: Chirag Shah (UOP)
- Chris Wozniak (Marathon) has reached out to Chirag and no reply yet. Will make second attempt today 3/24
- Jeremy Staats (Becht) suggested Matt Caserta or Andy Gysbers (both with Becht) as potential alternative speakers for this topic
- Leveraging IOWs to Enhance Renewable Diesel Unit Reliability and Profitability
- Nate Sutton – Equity Engineering
- Nate confirmed his interest and availability
- Cathy mentioned Flour is presenting on a similar topic upcoming AsiaTAC meeting April 27th "Establishing Integrity Operating Windows (IOWs) for Biofuels HDO Units"
- Transportation, Storage and Handling of Renewable feeds
- Potential Speaker – Polymeric coating/lining supplier (Dale Heffner will talk to Polymer suppliers)
- Dale Heffner reached out to has spoken with several coating suppliers, most are predominantly oriented towards rail car lining, so they might redirect us towards another person for tankage or process equipment. International (AkzoNobel) is the big player in biofuels rail and storage. Both Marathon and Haldor are big users. They indicated Gino is a good start for International, but may opt for their relevant SME.
-
- Cathy mentioned some problem areas with possible applications for nonmetallics
- Testing of chemical resistant coatings immersion coupons versus cell tests, which gets us into permeation and bond strength evaluation
- Controversial area mentioned by Cathy Shargay feeds at 180-degree F and above.
- Bob Bernard at International referenced by Nate Sutton
- Potential presentation outline
- Intro polymers PDC
- DH (5 minutes) Problematic areas where non/metallics may be a solution
- CS (15-20 minutes) Current coating used in biofuels Railcars, Storage tanks and process vessels (International) (TBD)
- Testing coating and lining systems (immersion testing versus ASTM C-868 cell testing) DH (15-20 minutes).
Roundtable Meeting Format Discussion
- Agenda timing will be based on confirmation of speakers, and their proposed presentation time.
- Team agreed meeting could occur over the full day: Tuesday June 21st, 8am to 4pm
- Preference to have all presenters attend in-person, due to Roundtable discussion format
- Member reception will occur after the Roundtable
- MTI Staff / Jeremy / Andrew to discuss pricing strategy offline
- Byron is collecting input on next version of flyer advertising Biofuels Roundtable
- Andrew suggested including photo from MTI Project instead of lifecycle image?
- Nate suggested getting flyer on MTI website homepage, LinkedIn, ASAP in order to "Save the Date" and raise awareness (Lindsey confirmed LinkedIn post next week, and will be in MTI Connect in April)
- Byron / Chris change title of community 385 --> "Renewable Hydrocarbon Biofuels Roundtable"
- Future meetings will coincide with routine TAC planning and will include smaller group (Nate + Karen as Project Champions, and the regular TAC Planning Group)
