Pyrophoric FeS – Case Histories and an Overview of a Classic Problem

When:  Aug 27, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM (ET)

Although the formation steps of pyrophoric iron sulfide have been known for many years, cases of internal fires during turnarounds with resulting damage to equipment continue to be reported. The damage can be very costly, as shown by two recent cases where fractionation towers have fallen over. This presentation provides a literature review, and compiles over 25 case histories, to help in the prediction of which equipment is at risk. It also summarizes the cleaning and washing steps typically implemented to prevent fires in equipment with pyrophoric iron sulfide, along with some precautions with the cleaning methods.
