This project follows the completed project 356 which produced an analysis of the existing literature on this topic and guidance on an experimental plant to determine the remaining lifetime of components composed of Alloy 20Cr32Ni after aging at high process temperature. The objective of this project is to conduct an experimental evaluation of this alloy following aging in a process environment to determine remaining utility for further plant service.

Create a guideline for failure mechanisms in the pulp and paper industry. This reference will include generic pulp and paper unit Process Flow Diagrams with the applicable damage mechanisms for each system in the process. Specifically, it will include the following mechanisms which are not available elsewhere: - Continuous Digester Caustic Stress Corrosion Cracking inspection techniques and repairs - Sulfur Stress Corrosion Cracking (Turpentine Systems) - Stress Assisted Corrosion - Recovery ...
The purpose of this project is to develop and deliver the 4th biennial MTI Global Solutions, which will take place in Charlotte, NC, in February 2026. The Symposium will include in-depth technical content, tours, an exhibit hall, networking and more.

There are numerous standard ASTM test methods for determining the relative resistance of materials or surface treatments to impingement, dry sliding wear, and wet reciprocating wear, however, there is no established correlation between a material’s mechanical properties and its wear resistance. The relationship between such wear tests and actual wear performance in equipment is unclear. The objective of this project is to develop approaches to predict wear rates for a range of materials frequently ...

Develop a supplementary material specification for pressure-retaining components within - SMR and ethylene heater fireboxes. The purpose of the supplementary material specifications is to decrease the variability in mechanical properties, improve the predictability of material performance, and reduce the frequency of failures. The material specification does not include tube supports, pigtails, or outlet manifolds.
NH3-cracking is very different from NH3-synthesis and any ranking of materials regarding resistance against NH3-cracking is almost unknown, because of the higher temperatures (600-900°C) and much higher nitriding potentials. This project aims describe the nitriding effects - and what can be done to prevent/delay those - in 100% NH3 (with and without 0,2% water) during the process step of pre-heating the ammonia at temperatures between 200 and 550°C. Nitriding experiments under pressurized conditions ...

ASSET (Alloy Selection System for Elevated Temperature) is a powerful high temperature corrosion prediction program that was developed in a JIP with MTI, Shell and others with DOE funding in 2000-2005. Action is required to update the software and improve its functionalities so that it can continue to be of value to MTI members.

The project proposes an investigation of stainless steels corrosion resistance to Pitting, Crevice and SCC resistance in temperatures above 90oC (194oF) and low chloride amounts. The aim is to complete the existing engineering diagrams defining the temperature-chloride content boundaries for these corrosion mechanisms.
No tool exist for predicting the corrosivity in the aqueous streams in renewable fuel processing units. The aqueous phase contains a combination of chemicals (CO, CO2, H2S, NH3 and HCl) which are all outside of the existing available models. The goal is to better understand the limits for corrosion resistant alloys under the aqueous conditions present in renewable fuel processing units
Develop Surface Modification Guide that focus on the application in the process industry. This guide shall cover the latest developments used in shops that are valuable for process industry applications. Conventional techniques, as well as new technology such as laser cladding, high velocity oxygen Fuel, diamond like PVD coatings will be included. Topics to be included in this Guide are descriptions of techniques and technology, wear mechanisms, selection criteria, QA/QC guidance for new equipment ...

This project will search for a firm that is able to non-destructively detect titanium hydriding in plant equipment. Past MTI titanium hydride projects looked at one specific method with the aim to adapt the method to identify titanium hydriding. This project has a much broader perspective aiming to test all techniques that have the potential to detect titanium hydriding. Industry information suggests that a method already exists. A few companies indicate they can non-destructively detect titanium ...

Additive Manufacturing (AM) provides designers the ability to build parts directly from computer-aided design (CAD) files. Metal AM technology is rapidly maturing and offers a range of benefits to reduce cost, schedule and increase performance of Boiler and Pressure Vessel (BPV) systems. The impact to the BPV industry has been limited by the availability of standards. The project objective is to use this effort to validate the qualification for materials used in fabrication of BVP equipment. ...
