Half pipe reactors are used frequently in petroleum refining and chemical processing plants. Due to the characteristics of their construction this reactor design can develop stress corrosion cracking (SCC) under the half pipe often due to the coolant chemistry. SCC causes leaks and can result in decommissioning with extremely long replacement times. This project will conduct a search of the literature on the topic and include a test program to identify the best options for prevention and repa ...

develop a guide for the installation of Dual Laminate piping - initial fabrication and material selection is out of scope
Determine what is the maximum rate of temperature change without damage to the lining system via FEA modeling. There is minimum adhesion values provided in various publications and standards. ASME RTP-1 Mandatory Appendix M-12 provides values in M12B-614.4 for thermoplastic linings on FRP substrates. Adhesion strength testing on carbon steel in accordance with ASTM D903 and D1781. These values shall be the basis to determine onset of failure using FEA modeling.
There are numerous standard ASTM test methods for determining the relative resistance of materials or surface treatments to impingement, dry sliding wear, and wet reciprocating wear, however, there is no established correlation between a material’s mechanical properties and its wear resistance. The relationship between such wear tests and actual wear performance in equipment is unclear. The objective of this project is to develop approaches to predict wear rates for a range of materials frequently ...

This project will search for a firm that is able to non-destructively detect titanium hydriding in plant equipment. Past MTI titanium hydride projects looked at one specific method with the aim to adapt the method to identify titanium hydriding. This project has a much broader perspective aiming to test all techniques that have the potential to detect titanium hydriding. Industry information suggests that a method already exists. A few companies indicate they can non-destructively detect titanium ...
Guidelines for evaluating equipment used in manufacturing of chemicals used in the high purity industry.
This project is intended to evaluate the relative corrosion resistance of unique alloys and hardfacings used in polymer extrusion equipment. A design of experiments to cover 3 chemical process environments involving alloys typically used in extruders. The primary benefit of completing this project is the creation of consistent corrosion data that can be used to make informed choices for polymer processing equipment materials for mildly corrosive polymer processing - improving equipment reliability ...
Develop a supplementary material specification for pressure-retaining components within - SMR and ethylene heater fireboxes. The purpose of the supplementary material specifications is to decrease the variability in mechanical properties, improve the predictability of material performance, and reduce the frequency of failures. The material specification does not include tube supports, pigtails, or outlet manifolds.

Phase 1 (MTI project #386) qualified an additive material manufacturing procedure using the Gas Metal Arc Directed Energy Deposition method (GMA-DED) and ER-2594 wire filler metal (equivalent to super duplex stainless steel UNS S32750) per the requirements of sections 1-4 and 6 in ASME Code Case and ASME Section IX, Part QW, Article VI suitable for equipment fabrication. The Phase 2 project objective is to use the results from Phase 1 to fabricate a small ASME vessel with a combination of wrought ...
The project objective is to investigate the relationship between various shot peening parameters on the galling and corrosion resistance of select nickel-based alloys.

ASSET (Alloy Selection System for Elevated Temperature) is a powerful high temperature corrosion prediction program that was developed in a JIP with MTI, Shell and others with DOE funding in 2000-2005. Action is required to update the software and improve its functionalities so that it can continue to be of value to MTI members.
NH3-cracking is very different from NH3-synthesis and any ranking of materials regarding resistance against NH3-cracking is almost unknown, because of the higher temperatures (600-900°C) and much higher nitriding potentials. This project aims describe the nitriding effects - and what can be done to prevent/delay those - in 100% NH3 (with and without 0,2% water) between 200 and 550°C. Nitriding experiments under pressurized conditions shall be undertaken to determine the resistance of various alloys. ...

This project aims describe the nitriding effects - and what can be done to prevent/delay those - in 100% NH3 (with and without 0,2% water) during the process step of pre-heating the ammonia at temperatures between 200 and 550°C. Nitriding experiments under pressurized conditions ...
The objective of this project is to produce an atlas for alloys C-22, C-2000, 59 and 686 microstructures that clearly identifies the phases that occur in the alloy. The thermo-mechanical processing and welding that produced the microstructure will be properly documented with each case. The microstructural cases will be correlated with published or computer generated TTT data to explain the presence of each phase.
This project follows the completed project 356 which produced an analysis of the existing literature on this topic and guidance on an experimental plant to determine the remaining lifetime of components composed of Alloy 20Cr32Ni after aging at high process temperature. The objective of this project is to conduct an experimental evaluation of this alloy following aging in a process environment to determine remaining utility for further plant service.
