FEA-Based Analysis of Thermal Ramp Rate Effects on Thermoplastic Liner ...

Determine what is the maximum rate of temperature change without damage to the lining system via FEA modeling. There is minimum adhesion values provided in various publications and standards. ASME RTP-1 Mandatory Appendix M-12 provides values in M12B-614.4 for thermoplastic linings on FRP substrates. Adhesion strength testing on carbon steel in accordance with ASTM D903 and D1781. These values shall be the basis to determine onset of failure using FEA modeling.

Alloy 625 Atlas of Microstructures Addendum (443)

An Alloy 625 vessel with heads, piping, welds, and flanges that was operated at the lower temperature regime of the TTT curve with exposure of about 40,000 hours has been removed from service and is available for metallurgical analysis. The project objective is to create an addendum to the Atlas of Microstructures for 625 with analysis of this material that would document the microstructure of this alloy with actual long term service exposure at moderate temperature.

Wall Thickness required for In-service Attachment Welding (441)

There are restrictions for in-service welding on carbon steel for external attachments used in alkaline service because cracking can occur with the residual stress contributed by welding when in contact with the process fluid. There is belief that in-service welding could be possible for these situations if the wall thickness is great enough so that the stress field due to welding does not reach the I.D. surface in contact with the process, and PWHT would not be required. The project objective ...

Fracture Mechanics (MTI Publication #8) Update (404)

The book, “MTI MANUAL NO. 8 FRACTURE CONTROL FOR THE CHEMICAL PROCESS INDUSTRIES” by D. Broek was published in 1983. It is a very instructive book aimed at providing a solid understanding and appreciation of the basics of fracture mechanics and its use to a technical audience not expert in this technology. Many technical developments in the use of fracture mechanics applied to process equipment have occurred in the 40 years since the 1983 publication. This book is of high quality and explains ...

Measurement and Correlation of Wear Resistance (427)

There are numerous standard ASTM test methods for determining the relative resistance of materials or surface treatments to impingement, dry sliding wear, and wet reciprocating wear, however, there is no established correlation between a material’s mechanical properties and its wear resistance. The relationship between such wear tests and actual wear performance in equipment is unclear. The objective of this project is to develop approaches to predict wear rates for a range of materials frequently ...

Sensitization Temperature Limits for Stabilized Stainless Steels (432)

AMPP SP0170 provides guidance on the sensitization temperature range for common stainless steel grades. There is evidence from observations made in operating plants that these current temperature ranges might be overly conservative. This project will focus on reevaluating the long-term minimum temperature limits for sensitization of chemically stabilized stainless steel grades, 321 and 347. The aim is to determine if a higher minimum sensitization temperature can be supported from recent technical ...

Additive Manufacturing of Rotating Equipment (426)

Rotating equipment components often have long lead time due to complexities of the design. Many components are manufactured through a combination of casting and/or complex machining. Economic pressures have resulted in the consolidation of many OEM manufacturers, with globalized supply chain leading to additional consolidation of manufacturing capabilities. Advancements in 3D Digital Reproduction and Additive Manufacturing offer potential alternatives to address these issues by providing alternative ...
