Finding Better Solutions: Understanding Surface Preparation for Repairing Tanks and Pipes with a Non-Metallic Overwrap
Note: This webinar is only available to MTI members.
Date Recorded: January 31, 2024
Instructors: Andy Palsule & Colton Sheets, Stress Engineering
SES partnered with MTI to conduct a study to understand the impact of different surface treatments of metal surfaces on the adhesion of a composite pipe repair system using coupon level lap shear and peel specimens. The metals used in the study were carbon steel, stainless steel and Alloy C276 and the surface treatments included NACE Rust grade C, grit blast to near white metal finish, wire brushed and solvent wiped. Resins in the test matrix included typical vinyl ester resins based on Bisphenol A and novolac epoxy backbone, both were tested with and without a primer. The test results showed that increasing the surface area of the metal using grit blasting offers the most consistent technique of enhancing adhesion of the composite wraps on the metal surfaces. Adhesion was largely a physical phenomenon where the increased surface area provided by grit blast allowed for physical tethering of the resin on the treated surface. The impact of solvent wipes was indistinguishable from the corroded baseline surface, and the impact of wire brushing was also minimal. Adhesion failure of the primer or unprimed resin on the metal surfaces was the principal mode of failure. SES recommends an additional study to quantify the performance of newer resins that are specially formulated for enhanced metal adhesion.

Claes Tigerstrand, Technical Manager, Sales Segment Heavy Industry, Outokumpu

Sustainability and global warming have become increasingly important in our daily life, economy and industry. Thus, it is a subject of strong interest in the steel market concerning carbon steel and stainless steel industries. The carbon dioxide (C02) footprint is becoming a more important factor in competition. When talking about the C02 impact of steel products, it is of utmost importance to consider the full picture of the total C02 footprint. There are significant regional differences when sourcing energy, electricity and virgin alloying elements. This webinar discusses the product-specific C02 footprint of our stainless steel products. Furthermore, a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study highlighting the total C02 footprint of using high-strength duplex stainless steel in a CPI-related application will be presented.

Effective Use of Duplex Stainless Steel in Storage Tanks and Pressure Vessels
Date Recorded: December 14, 2021
Instructor:
Claes Tigerstrand, Head of Heavy Industry, Technical Value Creation, Outokumpu
This webinar will elaborate on the advantages of selecting duplex stainless steels for large storage tanks or pressure vessels compared to both the more commonly used austenitic stainless steels, type 304 and 316, and carbon steels. The great combination of high mechanical strength and durability can potentially provide a more economical design. This can be realized by enhancing the structural efficiency which reduces the material consumption and shortens the fabrication time when thinner plates are assembled and no protective coatings are applied. Moreover, higher durability reduces the need for costly maintenance and repair work which facilitates a more reliable and long-lasting operation. Nevertheless, there are some considerations associated with the use of duplex stainless steels such as the more limited temperature range and the importance of being aware of how important material properties are affected by the different steps of the fabrication process. Thus, both opportunities and challenges will be addressed.

Welding Metallurgy of Duplex Stainless Steels
Date Recorded: August 26, 2020
Instructor:
Ravi Vishnu, Outokumpu

The historical evolution of different generations of duplex stainless steels will be traced and it will be shown how welding metallurgy has played a central role in these developments.

One impediment to the successful use of duplex stainless steels today is an incomplete understanding of the relevant standards governing welded constructions. An attempt will be made to present a nuanced understanding of different requirements in the codes related to welding. One common source of confusion is the differences in the requirements in many national and international standards. The differences will be highlighted, and an effort will be made to explain why they may have arisen.

Stress Relief Cracking in High Temperature Alloys
Date Recorded: December 17, 2019
Instructor:
Rishi Kant, Lehigh University
Many alloys used at high temperature exhibit stress relief cracking (SRC) during welding and/or post weld heat treatment (PWHT). This form of cracking typically occurs along the grain boundaries and results in a low ductility fracture. The problem is often associated with precipitation strengthening of matrix and localization of plastic deformation at grain boundaries to relax residual stresses from welding. In this work, we considered the effect of variations in PWHT temperature and cold working on the SRC susceptibility of a range of austenitic and ferritic alloys (Inconel 617, 740H, Haynes 230, 282, 347H, Grade 22 and 22V). Gleeble-based tests were developed that accurately simulate the cracking mechanism and provide very good control over temperature, stress and strain. The test results were rationalized based on detailed microstructural characterization and well-established concepts from literature. Six measures of SRC susceptibility were also identified and combined with concepts of Risk Priority Number (prioritization tool in 6-Sigma) to devise a ranking methodology for SRC susceptibility of alloys.
