Please join Keith Couch, Sr. Director of Global Technology Sales and Integrated Projects, for an overview of the efficiency driven Six Efficiencies (E6) framework and how it is used as an enabler to help each firm realize their Refinery of the Future. Couch will be delivering his Keynote on March 2, 2022, at the MTI Global Solutions Symposium in Orlando, Florida.

"As the refining industry looks to decarbonize, it is really important to understand how to align bankable investments with the need to reduce emissions, whether they be S
cope 1, 2 or 3," explains Couch. "While improved energy efficiency, CCUS, wind and solar can be leveraged to reduce Scope 1 & 2 emissions, this attacks only around 20% of the net problem, and does so at a very high cost.

As firms pursue increased efficiency, demand for fuels is projected to decline gradually, while demand for petrochemicals is forecasted to grow. This projected shift has stimulated innovations in technology that improve the economic prize for striking the optimal balance at each point in time.

"The scope 3, end use of products sold, accounts for over 80% of net emissions," reports Couch. "This is where refiners can truly move away from fuels into petrochemicals." He adds that this enables bankable projects that sequester carbon into durable end products and provides the cash flow to invest in Scope 1 & 2 and other forms of renewabl
e energy.

Couch foresees the refineries of the future having the flexibility to meet rapidly changing market needs -- and integrate petrochemicals -- to unlock additional value. In his presentation, he will highlight recent advances in crude-to-chemicals and provide some integration strategies that enable refiners to improve their economics in fuels markets, improve their market position through diversification into petrochemicals, or both.
