TRACK: Materials for Harsh Environments
Anhydrous ammonia is typically stored in carbon steel tanks, for both pressurized systems in ASME Code vessels and refrigerated systems at atmospheric pressure in API-design flat bottom tanks. Storage tank inspection experiences for both types of systems will be shared. The basics of ammonia stress corrosion cracking in as-welded steels will be presented, along with inspection techniques for evaluating and determining the integrity of storage vessels that are subject to, or have been, stress corrosion cracked.
